New book edited by Andreas Hess on the Basque Moment

Associate Professor Andreas Hess (UCD Sociology) edited a new book together with Xabier Arregi Gordoa. The book is titled "The Basque Moment" and has contributions on "Egalitarianism and the Traditional Basque Society". The discussion of egalitarianism goes to the very heart of Basque identity. The purpose of this book is to explore the concept, and to investigate whether egalitarianism is only a myth or ideology or whether there is some real substance and practice to it. This book approaches the topic of Basque egalitarianism from a broad range of disciplines and sub-disciplines, including social and contemporary history, sociology, political science, social anthropology and political philosophy. It also brings together people of different political conviction, spanning the divides that often occur when Basque traditions and ideas are discussed.

Huge congrats to Dr Grund for winning the University Teaching Excellence Award 2017!

We are extremely proud that Dr Thomas Grund (UCD Sociology) won the university-level teaching award 2017. After having received already a college-level teaching award, Thomas is being recognised as one of the best lecturers at the whole of UCD across all subjects! UCD Sociology and the College of Social Sciences and Law are very happy to have Thomas as an instructor.

At the undergraduate-level, Thomas teaches SOC10070 Sociological Analysis and Research Design and SOC20230 Analytical Sociology

This award has been established to recognise UCD faculty and staff in a teaching role who have demonstrated sustained commitment to teaching excellence and student learning at UCD across all subjects. The award carries a bursary of €1,500 which will be paid to the School to be spent on career development or teaching enhancement activity. There will be a ceremony in the autumn to formally present the award.
